Live Operations is the working space for what is happening now. It is where an incident is activated, where an alert is sent to the people who need it, and where patrols, safety check-ins and requests for assistance are watched. Command Center shows the wider picture and hands off to it; see Command Center.

The six areas

Table 1 — Live Operations areas and their views
AreaViews
OperationsOverview, Incidents, Responders, Notifications, Responses and Timeline.
MapOperational picture, Incidents, Personnel, Patrols and Safety.
PatrolsActive, Due, Overdue, Missed, Exceptions and Completed.
SafetySummary, Response states, and people Unaccounted for.
AssistanceRequests for assistance: Open, Assigned, and a Resolved view that currently always shows nothing. A request is identified by the start of the requester's user ID, not by name.
EmergencyProvider status, Agency bridges and Provider events.

Each area shows the filters that apply to it: search, site, incident, operational state, mode (live and drill, live only, or drill only), time window (from the last hour to all time), freshness, and map layers.

Activating an incident

An incident is activated from the Active Incidents workspace. The form asks for an Incident type (fire is preselected), an Incident title, a Location, an optional Description and an optional Site. The mode starts on DRILL.

The form has a LIVE / DRILL switch, and the choice matters:

  • A drill is a rehearsal. Drill incidents cannot send push or SMS alerts; the options show as blocked.
  • A live incident is real. The form warns that the mode is irreversible once activated.

When no incident is active the workspace says "No active incidents. This is the expected state absent a real emergency or drill." Activating an incident needs an administrator or editor role. The new incident is saved to the organisation's records, and the confirmation appears after it has been saved. This is where an operator activates an incident with a LIVE or DRILL mode, and New Incident in Command Center opens this workspace. Incidents can also be created in Response and from a detection.

Sending an alert

An alert is composed in the incident's detail view, which has tabs for Overview, Audience, Notifications, Responses, Responders, Timeline and Audit. The Audience tab previews how many people a message would reach, by channel, before it is sent. The form takes a Message, optional Instructions, a severity and a type, and a choice of channels: In-App, Push and SMS.

  • An alert at emergency severity sent by someone who is not an administrator is submitted for approval rather than sent. An administrator approves it under Admin → Mobile Operations → Notifications.
  • Push is offered in the form but is not delivered in this release. Push alerts are not handed to any push provider, and a delivery record marked "sent" is not evidence of receipt, so use In-App or SMS for anything that must be received.
  • SMS needs an active SMS connection for the organisation. Without one, the SMS option is disabled and labelled as not connected. Recipients also need a phone number on file that has opted in.
  • The confirmation after sending reports how many recipients the alert was addressed to. It is not a report of delivery.

Patrols, safety and assistance

The Patrols views follow patrol runs by state: those in progress, due, overdue, missed, completed, and exceptions raised. Field staff record patrols in the mobile application.

The Safety views summarise the check-in status that people report and list anyone not yet accounted for. The Assistance views list requests for assistance that field staff have raised: Open, Assigned, and a Resolved view that currently always shows nothing. A request is identified by the start of the requester's user ID, not by name. An operator can assign a request to a responder or mark it dispatched.

Emergency

The Emergency area has views for provider status, agency bridges and provider events.

Field reports

The toolbar has a Field Report control that is always disabled here, with the reason that field reports are captured in the mobile application. See Mobile Operations.

Live updates

The module refreshes when incidents, safety status, status requests, assignments or broadcast acknowledgements change, and reloads its snapshot every two minutes in any case. Use Refresh to reload on demand.

Who can do what

Everyone in the organisation can open Live Operations, but the toolbar commands (activate an incident, dispatch, send an alert) are disabled unless you are an administrator or editor, and say so when they are. Locations of individual people are shown only to those with the permission to see them.
