Communication is where an organisation talks to its own people inside Virtik: one-to-one and group messages, broadcasts that ask for an acknowledgement, and a connected mailbox. It is tied to the same sites, teams and incidents as the rest of the platform, so a message can be addressed to a person, a team, a site, a role or the whole organisation.
The five tabs
| Tab | What it contains |
|---|---|
| Overview | Inbox, Priority, Acknowledgements, Activity and Map views of what needs attention. |
| Messages | Conversations, scoped to Chats, a Person, a Team, a Site, a Role or the Organization. |
| Broadcasts | Broadcasts in four views: Active, Acknowledgements, Completed and History. |
| A connected mailbox, when the organisation has enabled one. | |
| History | The messages and broadcasts you can see, the newest 100 of each, in views for All, Messages, Broadcasts, Attachments and Acknowledgements. |
The commands are New Message, New Broadcast, Refresh and, when a mailbox is connected, Compose Mail. New Broadcast opens Messages, where a message to a team, a site or a role can be switched to a broadcast. The composer has a Require acknowledgement option; people then acknowledge the message, and the sender sees acknowledgement counts. Broadcasts cannot be scheduled.
Who can send what
Who can send depends on the scope. Messages to a person need only that the person belongs to the same organisation. Messages to a team or a site need membership of that team or site, or an administrator or editor role. Messages to a role need an administrator or editor. The Organization scope is offered only to administrators and editors, and a send to the whole organisation is refused for anyone else.
How delivery works
Messages and broadcasts are delivered inside Virtik: they are saved and sent on to members' open sessions as they arrive. Delivery to each person is not recorded. Sending from Messages or Broadcasts does not send an SMS, a push notification or an email. The Mail tab is different: it sends email through the connected mailbox (not verified against a live mail provider).
Text messages and push notifications belong to alerts sent from an incident in Live Operations. There, SMS needs a connection the organisation sets up and a recipient with an opted-in phone number on file, and push is not delivered in this release.
The Mail tab connects a Google or Microsoft mailbox and sends and receives email through it. Mail needs the organisation's administrator to configure the connection with the mail provider first. Until then a member sees that the provider is "not yet enabled for your organization", and an administrator sees "Setup required" with a button to configure it.
Acknowledgements
When a message requires acknowledgement, each recipient's acknowledgement is recorded. The Acknowledgements views list the broadcasts that need acknowledgement, with your own status and, for the sender and for administrators and editors, a count such as "X of Y acknowledged". There is no per-person roster here; individual responses to an incident alert appear in Live Operations.
